Lipid Chemistry and Analysis Course
October 27th - 28th 2005
A course of eleven lectures will be given by Professor FD Gunstone,
Dr WW Christie MBE and colleagues, under the auspices of the
Lipid Analysis Unit of Mylnefield Research Services (MRS) Ltd
at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee. The course
is designed especially for those working with lipids (fats and
oils) in the food, oleochemical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical
industries, or in academia, and it will provide an introduction
to the chemistry, physics, biochemistry and analysis of lipid
molecules. Among the topics covered will be:
- fatty acids: structure, biosynthesis, sources
- lipids: structure, biosynthesis, sources, minor components
- oils and fats in the market place: major and minor sources,
new crops
- processing: extraction, refining, hydrogenation, fractionation,
interesterification
- analysis: extraction, classical methods, chromatographic procedures
for fatty acids, lipids molecular species
- physical properties: crystal structure and melting behaviour,
spectroscopy (UV, IR, NMR, MS)
- reactions associated with unsaturated centres: hydrogenation,
oxidation etc.
- reactions associated with the carboxyl group
- major uses: food (butter, spreads); non-food (detergents,
coatings, lubricants, biodiesel)
- surfactants
- nutrition In addition, practical demonstrations of GC-MS and
LC-MS, with particular reference to their applications in lipid
analysis, will be given.
Accommodation
Accommodation has been reserved at a discounted rate in a local
hotel for the nights of 23 and 24 February. Additional nights’
accommodation can be reserved if requested. Transport will be
provided between the hotel and the Scottish Crop Research Institute.
Cost
The course costs £500 plus VAT including lunches, course
book and transport to and from SCRI. For full time registered
students the cost is reduced to £350 plus VAT.

Mylnefield Lipid Analysis will be attending Eurolipids 2005 at
Frankfurt on November 2nd to 4th 2005. You are very welcome to
visit us on our stand and discuss how we can help your business.
Prestigious Award
Prof Frank Gunstone was recently awarded the Alton E. Bailey Award
from the American Oil Chemists Society in recognition of his outstanding
research and exceptional contribution to the oils and fats field.
Dr Bill Christie also received the same award in 2003.

The Lipid Library:
Over the last year, we have experienced a number of difficulties
with the Server who hosts this site, and there have been several
lengthy periods when we have been off-line. For this reason, we
have decided to change our server and, for various other practical
reasons, split this site into two parts. The Lipid Library has
now moved to www.lipidlibrary.co.uk.
We hope this will greatly improve the reliability of our service.
We are taking preliminary bookings for our next course on "Lipid
Chemistry and Analysis" for February 24th and 25th
2005 - Click here for details.
Our literature Service on Lipid Analysis has also moved to the
new site.
Bill Christie received the Alton E. Bailey Award of the American
Oil Chemists' Society 'for exceptional service in the field of
lipids and associated products' for 2004 in Chicago on February
10th.
