Recognition for Prof Frank Gunstone
Prof Frank Gunstone is to be awarded the Chang Award of the American Oil Chemists Society in April in St Louis, USA. The Stephen S. Chang award recognizes a scientist or technologist who has made decisive accomplishments in research for the improvement or development of products related to lipids. The award consists of an honorarium and a jade sculpture of a galloping horse symbolizing the award.

Lipid Chemistry and Analysis Course October 26th - 27th 2006
A course of eleven lectures will be given by Professor FD Gunstone, Dr WW Christie MBE and colleagues, under the auspices of the Lipid Analysis Unit of Mylnefield Research Services (MRS) Ltd at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee.

The course is designed especially for those working with lipids (fats and oils) in the food, oleochemical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, or in academia, and it will provide an introduction to the chemistry, physics, biochemistry and analysis of lipid molecules. Among the topics covered will be:
• fatty acids: structure, biosynthesis, sources
• lipids: structure, biosynthesis, sources, minor components
• oils and fats in the market place: major and minor sources, new crops
• processing: extraction, refining, hydrogenation, fractionation, interesterification
• analysis: extraction, classical methods, chromatographic procedures for fatty acids, lipids molecular species
• physical properties: crystal structure and melting behaviour, spectroscopy (UV, IR, NMR, MS)
• reactions associated with unsaturated centres: hydrogenation, oxidation etc.
• reactions associated with the carboxyl group
• major uses: food (butter, spreads); non-food (detergents, coatings, lubricants, biodiesel)
• surfactants
• nutrition In addition, practical demonstrations of GC-MS and LC-MS, with particular reference to their applications in lipid analysis, will be given.

Accommodation
Accommodation has been reserved at a discounted rate in a local hotel for the nights of 25th and 26th October. Additional nights’ accommodation can be reserved if requested.

Transport will be provided between the hotel and the Scottish Crop Research Institute.

Cost
The course costs £525 plus VAT including lunches, course book and transport to and from SCRI.
