Choosing the correct method for Quantifying LC-PUFA in fish oil concentrates and algal oils

At Vitafoods Europe in May this year, we met a lot of people keen to know the difference between using European Pharmacopoeia (EP) and American Oil Chemist Society methodology (AOCS). As a result, our colleagues, Dr Charlie Scrimgeour, Consultant, and Claire Traynor, Head of Unit, have compiled a white paper that discusses choosing the correct method for Quantifying LC-PUFA in fish oil concentrates and algal oils. This will hopefully address a lot of the confusion surrounding the differences between the two and the apparent discrepancy in results observed.

AOCS/GOED Laboratory Proficiency Programme

Mylnefield Lipid Analysis recently participated in the AOCS/GOED Laboratory Proficiency Programme for nutraceutical oils, the worlds most extensive and respected collaborative proficiency testing program for oil and fat related commodities. More than 500 chemists participate in the Programme to verify and demonstrate the quality control of their laboratory. Participants use standard GOED methods for sample analysis and then compare their results with a large cross-section of other laboratories using the same methods and samples. Tests on the marine based oils covered: GOED Monograph Fatty Acid Composition (Ph. Eur. 2.4.29) Cd 3d-63 Acid Value Cd 8b-90 Peroxide Value Cd 18-90 p -Anisidine Value Claire Traynor, Head of Mylnefield Lipid Analysis said: I think proficiency testing like this goes a long way to boost customer confidence and also the confidence of our team as it is really useful for us to see how Mylnefield Lipid Analysis compares to other labs and that our analytical techniques are keeping up with a high industry standard. I am pleased to say that we did very well with no outliers.
