High-performance liquid chromatography
Gas Chromatography (GC)
We have four Agilent Gas Chromatographs. These are fully automated with auto-injectors and computerized data handling. We have two instruments primarily dedicated to routine fatty acid analysis, a third for the analysis of trans fatty acids and conjugated fatty acids, and a fourth for sterol analysis.
Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)
We have the latest Agilent 5975C GC/MSD complemented by the new Agilent 7890A GC. The Agilent 5975C inert MSD is a high performance, full-featured system for demanding analyses. The instrument has a monolithic hyperbolic quadrupole with electron impact ionization and a mass range of 1050 amu. In addition to delivering better MS resolution and the lowest mass deviation available, the system offers superior sensitivity and spectral integrity. Advanced analysis routines provide more information from every run, and automated spectral deconvolution, identification, and quantification software simplifies post-run analysis. The system is fully automated with an auto-injector.
GC/MSD ChemStation software is used for data acquisition, data processing, and reporting. This instrument can provide mass and structural data on a wide range of organic compounds. We have extensive use of this technique in structural analysis of fatty acids, but have also applied it to a range of other lipid molecules, including sterols and glycerol ethers.
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
We have several instruments for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), offering evaporative light-scattering (ELSD), variable wavelength UV and fluorescence detection. All the instruments have computerized data handling. The HPLC systems are used mainly for tocopherols analysis, lipid class separations, or in the silver ion mode for trans fatty acid analyses, and for molecular species separations.
